Zootopia Movie Review
Zootopia is an extremely popular Disney film that I have been dying to see but only recently got the chance to finally watch. It is a great animated film that is directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore and the work here is top notch. There are few animated films that really pull you in as an adult but Zootopia really does.
Zootopia is not your everyday Disney movie and you will know this right out of the box. Something about this movie makes it seem extremely “smart” though I am not fully sure what it is. Perhaps it is the themes that are constantly running through the basic story and making us think as adults. Perhaps it is simply that they didn’t bother to “dumb it down” for the younger crowd. Whatever it is, it makes Zootopia a special little film.
The end result? We can watch a film about rabbits, rhinos, lions, possums and countless other animals that act, walk and talk like humans. They run a city and interact in human-like ways while carrying on a storyline……All of this happens and we, as smart adults, can get hooked into their world and buy into it. That is special, indeed.
Voiced by a number of awesome stars like Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin and Idris Elba, Zootopia is hilarious and passionate all at the same time.
The basic story is about a young girl bunny that is the first female hired onto a police force of rhinos, buffalos and similarly powerful animals. Being that she is a tiny bunny and all, she is not respected and goes through the typical problems you might expect. Finally, she is tasked with solving a mystery and is forced into working with a fox that always has an ulterior motive. (Go figure, right?)
The characters are extremely fun and will keep you laughing out loud throughout. The sloths that run the DMV (Department of Mammal Vehicles, snort!) are a perfect example of how Zootopia takes and inserts just enough adult humor to keep us engaged, while still moving the plot quickly enough to keep the kids engaged.
This simple premise is loaded with twists and turns that will keep your little ones riveted and you happily following along. Smart as it is, you will actually find yourself surprised at some of the directions it goes. That is a very unusual thing for a Disney film.
The movie is fast-paced fun that is great for the entire family. Nobody will walk out from Zootopia bored or unhappy. The movie is just too cute for words and smart enough to keep everyone involved.
Zootopia is highly recommended and if you have not watched it yet, be sure to set aside a nice Saturday evening with the family. You will all enjoy it and might even cue it up for a second viewing in no time flat. It is that darn good.
