#BroadwayInPortland hosted me on opening night to share with you my opinion and review of the show
Miss Saigon, the season opener for the 2019/2020 season of the Broadway in Portland showcase at the Keller Auditorium was a huge hit…. I don’t think they could have picked a better musical to set the pace for an amazing year!
Over the years, I had heard many things about the Broadway hit Miss Saigon but had never had the privileged of seeing it in person. Last night my Broadway viewing resume grew to a whole new status. I have seen funny shows, entertaining shows and magical shows, but until last night I had not seen a show that made me feel so much! These feelings were true, deep emotions that had me immersed in the love and pain felt of Kim Emily Bautista. The raw passion between Kim and Chris Anthony Festa will have you feeling like you are watching a private and intimate love affair that consumes you to your soul.
This show is not completely serious though,….. in fact you will get a healthy dose of some hot, heavy and super sexy scenes. “The Engineer” Red Concepción brings it! He owns the stage with his outgoing and sleazy charm as he leads his ladies through nights of paid passion at the Dreamland club to the attending soldiers. This show will have many adults blushing with delight as these sexy ladies are not shy in the least. With this said, you might want to consider this when bringing young children.
This show takes some heart wrenching twists and turns. I found it interesting that this classic musical is based off true events surrounding the Vietnam war. Knowing this, it makes the emotion run that much deeper. Miss Saigon is truly a must see show that is unlike any other Broadway musical I have seen. They have proved themselves by winning in excess of 70 awards and achieving record breaking sales. Cameron Mackintosh said “It’s hard to believe that it has been over 28 years since MISS SAIGON first opened in North America but, if anything, the tragic love story at the heart of the show has become even more relevant today with innocent people being torn apart by war all over the world.”
Synopsis
MISS SAIGON tells the story of a young Vietnamese woman named Kim, who is orphaned by war and forced to work in a bar run by a notorious character known as the Engineer. There she meets and falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris, but they are torn apart by the fall of Saigon. For 3 years, Kim goes on an epic journey of survival to find her way back to Chris, who has no idea he’s fathered a son. This new production features stunning spectacle and a sensational cast of 42 performing the soaring score, including Broadway hits like “The Heat is On in Saigon,” “The Movie in My Mind,” “Last Night of the World” and “American Dream.”
