I’m sure you all know that the world’s best musical, The Lion King, has been making it’s return to Portland straight from Broadway. I had the pleasure of seeing this incredible show in my hometown, Portland, the other night. And I really must say it was breathtaking.
Never have I been to a show where you are so surrounded in culture, music, and dance. You expect to see a great show, no doubt, but when the opening number “Circle of Life” starts playing, you can’t help but to smile and be drawn in. The only thing that could take my eyes away from the stage, was the parade of animals coming down the aisles to greet the new lion prince. The stage was all around you, something I will never forget, and probably never see again.
Rafiki, played by Buyi Zama, was definitely my favorite character in this show. She had a hilarious way of bringing humor to the show when things started getting heavy. And, she was able to keep belting the highest and lowest notes with an incredible voice and ease the whole way through. Everyone seemed to be born for the role they played and were able to really blend the animal actions through a human in a way that seemed seamless.
The Lion King just wouldn’t be without Pumba to Zazu. I felt they were able to add the perfect amount of humor and silliness while keeping the production very mature and serious. But, wait, don’t even get me started on Scar….. what a strong and, dare I say, sexy character! He took evil to a whole new level where you hated him … but ohhh kinda loved him.
I guarantee this is one show you will not be disappointed and the great news is… there are still plenty of shows still available but…they are filling up. So, get your tickets while you can and don’t miss this amazing production!
