These days, many people my age are in what they call the sandwich years. During this time many of us have children of our own that we are running around caring for but we also are caring for an aging parent or grandparent.
My grandmother is very independent, she loves life and wants to enjoy and experience it as much as possible while she still can. Bless her heart though, she just recently had to sell her house and move to an assisted living. This has been very difficult and life changing for her. There she has her own little bathroom, kitchenette, bed and sitting area. This has been such a major adjustment and I truly feel for her. She is no longer able to do everything that she had done before… like bake cookies, or have a box of ice in the freezer all that was very special to her.
I have tried to step in and make her feel as comfortable as she can. She loved going to Sam’s Club and mosey around looking at the latest little treat or gifts. Aside from being there for her and visiting weekly, I am also doing all her Sam’s Club shopping. I love shopping for her at Sam’s Club because I know they will have everything she need all in one trip and for the best possible price.
Cases of water – We all know these can be very heavy, she could NEVER lift one of these. But, they have said, a major problem with our elderly is keeping them hydrated. By her having a case to use when she wants and not have to wait for an assistant bring them to her is very convenient.I want my grandmother to have the all the comforts for home so I have put together a checklist for some of the monthly necessities while shopping at Sam’s Club
Their favorite snacks – By having her favorite treats and goodies handy, she feels less deprived and in more control of her choices. Doing this helps make things feel more like home.
Buy Bladder control products like Poise® or Depend® No matter how old you get, you never fully get over your modestly. I pick her up Poise® Pads – Maximum Absorbency provide even more absorbency to give you the confidence and protection you need for your Light Bladder Leakage (LBL). The absorb-loc® core quickly locks away wetness and odor, while the leak-block* sides provide discreet and worry-free protection. These are her favorite and she prefers these to the “house” stock. I feel this is a small think I can do to make her more comfortable.
BONUS*** – When you open your Depend packaging look for a sticker inside that you can use to redeem at the pharmacy for an awesome caregiver sample kit. This offer is available while supplies last, so hurry in today to find your packaging with this offer! I am excited to redeem mine the next time I go in.
Prescriptions and over the counter meds – Sam’s Club offers their members the very best prices you will find on medication and since, your loved one will most likely be on a fixed income, every little bit of savings can help.
Comfort Items – Nothing can keep things feeling more like home than having things that are your very own. I make sure I do a check and see if my grandmother need a new blanket, towel or robe. These have been such mood lifters for her and Sam’s club always has excellent prices on these type of item.
Gifts – My grandmother has always been so generous and just because she can get out like she used to, doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to give like she used to. So, before I go for my monthly shopping trip for her, I ask if there are any birthdays or gifts she wants me to shop for.
Sam’s Club is also amazing because they are your one-stop shop for all things caregiving, including prescription refills, free health screenings, and health-related products like over the counter medications, creams, and vitamins.
Sam’s Club recently started a new program for family members who are caring for a loved one, here you will find a webpage that helps members find related products, expert advice and savings they need to make caregiving easier. Visit SamsClub.com/caregiving or the kiosks in select locations around the country for more information.
