The best tips for puppy leash training
Puppy Leash training can sometimes be really annoying. In fact, you can say that they are as annoying as they are cute. Like our own babies, they require lots of time and love. There are numerous things you need to teach them but for some people, this may look like a hassle.
In most cases, this is due to lack of experience; new dog owner simply doesn’t know how to behave in certain situations. This is especially true when it comes to walking your dog. Taking a puppy
outside sometimes feel like a choir. With all the pulling and barking, it can feel a bit too much at the times (especially if you’re tired after a long work day).
In order to teach your puppy some basic things, we made this short leash training article. Read on!
Make sure to start early
Basically, leash training needs to start at your own home. Before you even go outside, your puppy has to get accustomed to leash. You can’t simply go outside and put a leash on it expecting it will
behave properly. Puppy will start tangling, pulling, lounging and causing all sorts of mischief. Like with any type of training, it needs to start from the earliest age. First you need to introduce
collar and harness. Even if a dog is resisting you need to be persistent. Put it on a dog and allow it to get accustomed to it. Of course, there is no need to keep it on during the whole day; just for a while bit. You can also make trial walks. Put a leash on a puppy and start walking around the house. Have in mind that puppies tend to go wild when outside. This way, at least it will learn how to walk properly beforehand.
Use commands
Vocal commands are something that is used all the time. Going outside is no different. Puppy needs to learn the command. At the same time, make sure to present the leash each time you give the command. It’s very important for a puppy to associate positive things with a leash (in other words, going outside). This way, you will eliminate at least one issue. Whenever you put a leash on the dog, it will know that good things are going to happen.
Relaxing puppy beforehand
Sometimes it feels as if your dog’s heart is going to pop out of its chest. Puppies get excited quickly but they can also be relaxed relatively quickly. If a dog is too excited before going outside, you
can rest assured it will start pulling the leash. Perhaps the best way to reduce this feeling is by taking a break at the door. Make sure that the dog understands you’re going outside. But don’t allow it to go outside before it relaxes a bit. Nevertheless, you still expect some pulling. When a dog starts pulling the leash, don’t try to catch up with it. Instead, stand your ground and don’t move a muscle. Let it know that you’re the boss. Make sure it gets relaxed and starts walking normally.
Prevent lunging
Young dogs are also prone to lunging . Whether they’ve seen a person on a bicycle or skateboard or they’ve noticed another dog, they will lunge at it. This may cause conflict or it may scare a small child. Lunging is another thing that needs to be prevented. Even though this happens due to over excitement, it can scare someone and can potentially be dangerous. Your dog needs to understand that it isn’t ok to lunge at other people and dog. You can also partially prevent this by recognizing the situation and making a distraction. Treats always work well in such cases. However, it’s much better if the puppy learn through your body language that this is not the proper behavior.
With these tips Puppy Leash training tips, your puppy will learn to walk on a leash in no time. Make sure to be patient; like
with every training it is something that needs time. Also make sure to avoid physically punishing your
dog. Puppies get enough information through your body language – there is no need to go overboard
and harm your dog in any way.
