When I heard buzz about the next big Disney movie and that it was being put together by Ron Clements and John Musker the creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin ( my all time favorite movies from my childhood)… I simply knew it was going to be an amazing movie and I couldn’t wait.
I was able to screen Moana twice last week in LA and I must say, it only gets better each time you watch it (watch for the hidden Disney character from other Disney movies sprinkles through).
My Top 5 Reasons You Must See Moana!
1- The Message
Moana is a strong and determined girl who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite the Heart of Te Fiti. She will go through so much during her adventure to save all of the people in her tribe, but she never doubts herself deep within. I am so glad Disney has released a movie like this, it will show my children that you must do the absolute best you can at all times. It shows them they must follow their heart even when times are rough. And most of all, to be true to themselves, no matter what anyone else things.
2- The Music
Like every other Disney movie, the music will have you humming for weeks to come. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the co-writer, did an incredible job capturing Polynesian culture and the tradition of Walt Disney Studios and bringing it together in each song in Moana. I think I will enjoy it and be singing it more than my kids!
3- The Animation
Moana is created by the same animations as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. These two are my all time favorite Disney movies, and I can see the resemblance between them and Moana. As always, I am blown away by how animation has progressed. It was incredible to see the lifelike waves in the ocean, Moana’s hair blowing in the wind, and so much more. I was so impressed with the quality and the realistic features.
4- The Colors
I have never had the privilege to go to Hawai’i, but the colors in this film is exactly how I would imagine it! The sky, the flowers, the ocean, I felt as though I could smell the saltwater and coconut! But it wasn’t just the colors that stood out, but how the colors and shapes moved and flowed so perfectly.
5- She Is Relatable
I could see so many relatable characteristics in Moana. She is a strong and determined 16 year old who is out to conquer the world. I remember being her age and having the confidence that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. She teaches you about determination, friendship, and staying true to yourself . She will be such a great person for my own daughters and sons to look up to when they see this movie.
Bonus Reason**
The Disney short Inner Workings
This has by far been my most favorite short! Kids and adult will both laugh as you follow Paul with his struggle between following the heart and its wants and desires vs. following the brain which keeps us on track and has our long term interest in mind. I think I am more of a heart person. I would love for you to follow up and let me know if you are a heart or brain after you see it.
