Can you feel it in the air? The changing of the season….it’s coming! The dip in the temperature, cold crisp mornings, the shorter day AND yes cold and flu season. There is no getting around it, this is the time to cover our coughs, stock up on vitamins and keep tissue in our purse. For a mom, nothing can stop you in your tracks faster than feeling that synonymous tickle in the back of your throat or that pressure in your head build that says “oh no, I can’t get sick now!”. All of a sudden your mind goes to….but who is going to watch the kids and I have that big meeting on Tuesday AND who is going to take care of ME…. oh wait, we know the answer to that! We need to take care of ourselves when we are sick ladies… silly us, I almost forgot!
Since most of us are running this crazy show on our own,
we could use all the help we can get!
So here is 5 tips to help you stay healthy all winter long
and what to do if you do get sick!
- The best way to give your immune system a quick boost is to feed it a healthy low sugar diet. Sugar can lower the immune system. Feeding your family a healthy whole foods diet eliminates the large amount of sugar in processed foods that can leave your immune system weak.
- Sneak healthy immune boosters into your diet. At the first sign of illness give your immune system a boost by cooking a dinner packed with natural antibiotics like garlic, onion, and oregano, these have been known for generations to help fight off illness.
- Boost your immune system with power packed elderberry syrup or gummies! These are a great way to boost your immune system keeping it strong and healthy. These are packed with antioxidants and loads of vitamin C your family can be kept healthy every day.
- Keeping your body strong and healthy with plenty of physical activity! This is a great way to help keep yourself from getting sick. Encourage physical activity even in the winter. Spend time as a family working out or even dancing around their house while cleaning to work more physical activity into your day.
- Sleep is vital for a healthy immune system. Try to get to bed an hour earlier! By sleeping well can keep yourself from getting sick. Sleep is when our bodies spend the most effort in fighting off bacteria and viruses. When you are sleep deprived you are more likely to catch every cold virus that you come into contact with.
It is estimated up to 20% of Americans will get the flu this year and in the event that you DO get sick…. it is best to be prepared, nobody wants to go to the store, hunt and search for your medication, stand in line and go all the way home. No, I want relief and I want it at the first sign of discomfort. This is why I suggest that you get ahead of the game and be prepared NOW…. because sadly, even if you follow all the tips above, you will most likely get sick sometime this year, especially if you have kids. Vicks products have been a tried and true household brand that many of you can remember from when you were kids…. who else can relate to the famous swipe of Vicks VapoRub across your nose when you were sick?!?!?! I know that when I am not feeling feel well, I grab the VapoRub and apply…. it gives me the same warm feeling as if I am swept back to my childhood being cared for by my mother. No medicine cabinet is complete without Vicks and Puffs products.
