This back to school year looks very different for many of us, and most of us are taking a very different approach to this craziness than we did in the Spring. Everyone had their opinions on when the school year will get back to normal. Here in the NW, I don’t see the school year getting back to normal at all this year….. yikes, did I just put that in writing! Our state has set some pretty strict requirements and they need to remain that way for a minimum of 3 weeks before they will consider opening school back up. That combined with cold and flu season starting, means I need to get very comfortable with distance learning as I don’t see things getting back not “normal” before March and by then, whats the point in opening school.
So, I have really hammered down in trying to get organized and creating a “school space” that works for the best learning situation. I have to admit, this is very difficult for me, I am not naturally organized at all and this is a forced trait. I am trying to be realistic with my expectations but at the same time trying to get ahead of the game with ideas, known roadblocks and supplies. I have two children that will be online homeschooling high school and for me this will not be difficult, it will be my elementary child that will be a struggle.
I have started looking into homeschooling groups in our area. More than ever, people within your neighborhood are putting together small group pods to provide guidance and support. These are generally 3-5 kids that stay together a few times a week to connect socially and do group learning. The idea is that parent rotate helping all while keeping your pod very small. I think this is going to be a lifesaver for him and me. Check with your school or “local Facebook pages” for connections.
What do you need to set up a home school home office space
Now, when setting up your homeschool home office, you need to think about your child…. what get’s them excited to learn, what are their distractions, what is projected to be on the learning agenda for the school year? If they are learning fractions, maybe supply them with some “pizza” fraction posters on the wall or a times table poster. Maybe invest in a star chart to help them visually see their daily or weekly progress. Get them that fun pencil set, or the smelly markers. Usually those are not allowed in school, so this could be an opportunity to turn this unusual school year into a very fun and positive experience.
