Fourth of July Fireworks Safety Tips
Fourth of July is a time for celebration, fun and excitement. Unfortunately, safety can get lost in the mix when we are having fun. This is particularly true when you factor in fireworks. Although fireworks have become heavily regulated, there are still plenty of options out there for the amateur on Independence Day. Here are some fireworks safety tips to remain safe if you’re planning on shooting off fireworks for the Fourth of July:
Have a Fire Extinguisher Ready At All Times
While this might seem like a common sense thing, you would likely be shocked at the percentages of people that don’t even consider it. Having a water hose nearby is a good idea also, but you still need to have a fire extinguisher in case of emergency.
Keep Kids Back At All Times
Although the fireworks that we purchase are generally far less powerful, they are still more than strong enough to cause great injury to your children. When you are shooting off fireworks, the best thing that you can do is have your kids behind some type of protective area. Here are some other ideas for keeping kids safe on the Fourth of July.
Always Purchase Legit Fireworks
Buying fireworks from a roadside stand or Walmart will not give you massive explosions. For most people, that is perfectly acceptable and preferred. For a select few, anything short of blowing up the city is a disappointment. Make sure that your fireworks are legal and that you do not modify them in any way to remain safe.
Inspect Your Fireworks Closely Before Shooting Them Off
Fireworks are often defective and it is a good idea to check them out before you light them up. Make sure that there are no cracks, breaks or compromised seals. Also be sure to check the fuse and never light one that has been shortened a great deal or that may go off quickly.
Never Aim Fireworks at Anyone
Again, we are talking common sense. Aiming fireworks at someone can be extremely dangerous and should never happen. Likewise, make sure that you do not accidentally aim a bottle rocket at yourself. Never put your face or any other part of your body in the line of fire.
Never Drink and Do Fireworks
Alcohol may be a lot of fun on occasion and the Fourth of July certainly qualifies for many people. Despite this, it is a bad idea to mix alcohol and fireworks. If you checked the newspapers the day after the Fourth of July, nearly every accidental firework explosion or problem will be related or exacerbated by alcohol. Leave the fireworks to the sober people.
