Many of you may already know… but I am a mother of 6 and I can attest that no two children are exactly the same. I have had it all, night criers, I had all night sleepers, I had ones that pooped all the time and some that I was worried if they were ever going to poop. Once I got one child figured out… I got thrown for a loop and had another baby with all new quirks to try and solve… kinda like a puzzle.
After my fifth baby… I was feeling like I should be an expert by now, but I can still remember the day when I first saw my 2 month old sitting in his swing and projectile spit up what seemed like half across the room. My jaw fell to the floor and was immediately concerned. Hoping that it was a onetime thing, I just continued as normal but this had become a few times a day event for him. Within a week, I had made an appointment to see our pediatrician and had discovered at our son was suffering from Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER).
Though all most two thirds of every healthy baby goes though a spit up and fussiness phase, some babies may have a slightly more immature or sensitive digestive system. GER is an uncomplicated reflux not to be confused with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Please ask your pediatrician more about the important differences between the two.
Since my son had the uncomplicated version of reflux, my DR. recommended plenty of burping… more often than any of my other previous children, to feed him smaller amounts at a time but more frequent and to leave him upright for at least 20 min after each feeding. These seemed like a good start since I was not interested in medication. The other suggestion our Dr. had, was to include a bit of rice cereal into the bottle of each feeding. This in it’s self came with other complications, the formula became too thick for him to suck and little bits of the rice cereal clogged the nipple which made him very upset and tire very fast…. all of this would lead to a horrible cycle of him not being happy or satisfied. This then made me really concerned about his overall intake and nutrition. It was a horrible position to be in.
Now there is Enfamil A.R.™ a formula that has been proven to significantly reduce frequent spitting up by over 50% in infants with frequent spit up. Enfamil A.R. meets the reflux reduction guidance of the American Academy of Pediatrics. They have accomplished this by adding rice starch straight to the formula blend. This provides a more convenient and nutritionally balanced option than adding rice cereal yourself. Not only does Enfamil A.R.™ offer a Neuro Complete blend of nutrients that supports your babies health and brain development but this formula also has a prebiotic blend to help support your baby’s digestive health. Enfamil A.R.™ is available in powder and ready to use!
