Disclosure : This How To Put Together An Earthquake Preparedness Emergency Kit is a paid sponsored post is brought to you by SureFire, however all thoughts and opinion are my own.
Imagine for a moment…… what your typical day looks like, maybe you are at work, maybe you are rocking your baby to sleep, or maybe you are fixing dinner while the kids are playing outside. All of a sudden the ground starts shaking, windows start rattling and you find yourself in the dark, it doesn’t take long to realize you are in the middle of an earthquake. Within those few short moments, people will experience an unpredictable and overwhelming reaction…. much of the time it is the opposite of what you expect. For some people, they may find themselves very calm and collected when stress hits, however others may freeze or panic.
Earthquakes have always been on my mind…. ever since I was little, you see, I grew up and currently live in the Pacific Northwest and we have been indefinitely warned that a catastrophic earthquake within our lifetime is not a matter of if…. but WHEN!
How To Put Together An Earthquake Preparedness Emergency Kit
Since there has been a lot of chatter lately on our local new about new seismic activity in the ocean, I now feel that now is the time to get real and finally make an earthquake preparedness emergency kit. Being that my husband is a firefighter, I have added pressure from him to make sure we are prepared.
One of the first things you are going to want to have accessible is a flashlight like SureFire. Surefire flashlights are an incredibly durable and high performing LED light that you can actually recharge…. a single charge can last up to 45 hours of use time on low. I suggest having at least one flashlight on all levels of the house, if not one in every room! Remember, with an extreme earthquake, you will most likely be dealing with power loss, unstable or collapsing walls and possible water damage. Trying to find your way around debris in the dark will be very challenging.
Next you will want to get a large durable tote with a lid and place it somewhere in storage that will be easily accessible and with the least likelyhood of being trapped.
(This sample kit is a start, you will need to prep and pack for your size family. Each person should have a minimum 72hr supply)
Inside your Earthquake preparedness emergency kit, you should consider the following below, some of these are simple suggestions, while others may be a fresh idea to add to your already put together kit :
- diapers/wipes
- hand sanitizer
- firstaid kit
- toilet paper
- water
- SureFire flashlight
- battery operated power charging pack
- batteries
- old sweaters and t-shirts
- pet food
- dried/canned food (with can opener)
- phone numbers (to family and friends as phone may not work)
- medication (both over the counter and necessary prescription – this will require you to check dates often)
- fire extinguisher
- feminine products
- infant food/formula
- crank radio
- pliers and other tools to turn off utilities
- family information packet including a current photo (for location and identification purposes)
- copies of important documents, ( insurance)
- worker gloves ( for removing large items or glass to get out of your home safely)
- duck tape / pen/ paper ( this is to leave a note on a door or car to communicate with neighbors or emergency departments)
Aside from the kit, you also need to have a family plan AND have a plan for different situations and scenarios. Best case scenario… everyone is together, during an earthquake emergency, but chances are, it could hit while kids are at school or you are at work…. what is the plan then, especially if there are no cell phones.
One of the thing about the Portland area in Oregon….. we are so cut off by water. We have the Columbia River that separates Oregon and Washington, and we have the Willamette River that divides Portland in half. The thought of this effects our family very much as my husband works in Washington as a firefighter and if an emergency arises…. well, he will be staying there, whether we have been able to contact him or not. We have created several meeting spots and plans for different situations and the level of destruction.
Nobody knows when an earthquake will hit, there is generally no warning, so being prepared is key!

About Surefire
This light weight SureFire Sidekick, is a full power flashlight with 3 settings up to 300 lumes, it was once only reserved for military and law enforcement but now is available to the general public.
My favorite feature is it’s ability to recharge with any USB charger, not having to deal with batteries solves half the problems that traditional flashlights have to face. I also really like it’s wide beam… this will be so helpful in an emergency setting.
This compact flashlight is made out of weather resistant polymar material.

These are great supplies for a “Bug out bag”, thanks for the ideas! Living in Seaside, this is on our mind a lot because we have had to evacuate several times for tsunami warnings. I’ve actually been thinking a lot about what needs to go into an updated emergency bag now that we have rabbits, LOL! If I feel an earthquake here, I know it’s time to RUN because a tsunami would be 20 minutes away from our house!!
