Never. In all the years of seeing Broadway shows have I watched a production that was so emotionally heartfelt. The cast, though small, only 8 cast members put on a show that has so much feeling that it crushed you on the inside out. Trying to choke back tears and feelings that not one person in the whole audience could say they hadn’t felt at one time in their life made it a truly a relatable show full of real emotion.
I had been listening to the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack often for the last several months but never has a full grasp of the story or characters until I saw the show with the songs in order and in relations to the content…. it makes so much more sense now! Evan Stephan Christopher Anthony was simple amazing, his voice sent chills down your spine. He did a wonderful job expressing is anxiety and insecurities, yet to feel love over shadowed his judgment, though he knew it would hurt more in the end.
There is not one person in this whole show that you can’t feel the impact of simply life and the pressures all around us. I am sure to everyone those pressures are different , just like in the show, but that is what made it so real! Heidi Hansen, Evens Mom, Jessica E Sherman really tugged on your heart strings as a parent. Oh my, the struggles that we all go through, not realizing we are not the only one with pain. The way they let you in and shared the dark, lonely and ugly feelings they all felt but for very different reasons is indescribable.
I have been hearing a lot of chatter, people asking if Dear Evan Hansen is better than Hamilton , probably because these are the two biggest and most current shows on tour at the moment and I would say they are both are amazing, but offer two VERY different styles and feels that are not really comparable. With Dear Evan Hansen, the storyline and the message is the real star here, making it an emotional roller-coaster, yet somehow ends with a feel good conclusion. There is no dancing in Dear Evan Hansen and more story line, message singing that takes place in current time. Hamilton, now, is ALL singing/rapping and a fair amount of dancing. The storyline in more of a biography that walks you though the full life of Hamilton… through all of his highs and lows. Hamilton is a period picture set in 1776.
My solution to the question of which show is better….. see them both 😉
