Have you gotten your golden ticket????
Ticket to go see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Portland that is!
The HIT Broadway show Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is now playing at the Keller auditorium in Portland now through August 18th
I attended the opening night show on Tuesday with VERY high expectations and to sum it all up…… It Didn’t Let Me Down! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite movies as a kid and was just as thrilling live on stage.
Now, it’s going to take a special person to nail Willy Wonka, being that most people will be coming in with prior expectations. The generational gap of the two Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movies is quite wide. You have Gene Wilder from the original 1971 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production, here Willy (Gene) was soft spoken with just the right amount of witty and quirky but in the the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake with Johnny Depp, he was far out there…. odd, creepy, loud and socially awkward. During this Broadway show, I was so pleased to see that Willy –Noah Weisberg, was able to ride that line so well. There were many times during the show I was able to say, “that is do Gene” or ” that sounds like something Johnny would have done”, yet he was able to still make the show his own.
Before the show had even started, I was wondering how they were going to portray many of the scenes, including the Oompa Loompas. I am not going to spoil the surprise but, let’s just say they did it perfectly. They didn’t miss a beat, the blueberry pie, the squirrel scene and the video game, all done so well with their special effects. In fact my son was still asking after the show, “how did they shrink that kid”.
The talent involved in this show is unprecedented! There are three boys that play Charlie Bucket – Henery Boshart, Brendan Reilly Harris and Rueby Wood. It is incredible that children at this age are full of such talent. Their acting abilities and singing capabilities are truly unbelievable.
I was so excited to be able to share this experience with my youngest son who turns 9 in a few days! This was his first Broadway experience and he was sucked in once the curtain went up. If you are looking for a Broadway show that is perfect for the whole family or are looking for a show that would be a perfect first introduction, than Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a perfect fit.
Small disclosure: If you watch this show, you will be singing “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket” for the next couple days….;) Be prepared…lol!
