It is that time a year again, time to make memories that will last a life time for your children. I know that sounds like a huge responsibility when I say it that way but it is true, many of us can remember our childhood as if it were yesterday. My childhood was full of happy memories, the seasons were always exciting and warm, with cookies baking, and night time stories being read.
This one particular year, I think I was 8 years old I had gone to Macy’s ( back then Meier & Frank) with my family and saw Santa. In our area that was the most magical place to go see Santa, they called it Santaland, as you walked through those doors it was like Disneyland but for Christmas…. they had hundreds of decorated trees, snow everywhere, but the best part was the monorail that road on the ceiling all around the room. As I got in line to go tell Santa my special requests, I can still feel the excitement of knowing my turn was almost up.
For some reason that year when I went to go tell him what I wanted, he handed me a candy cane and said, “this is a very magical
candy cane” and that on Christmas Eve I should hold on to it in front of the tree and make a special wish for anything that I wanted and that that wish would come true. Well, being only 8 years old, I was super excited and I knew exactly what I wanted. There was this one present that I wanted so incredibly bad that every time I saw it I would ask for it constantly and I wasn’t normally that kind of a child but right there in the middle of the toy section, there it was….. that little cream Volkswagen bug that was motorized, it had big shiny head lights and a brown cloth convertible top. I can still see it, even now, and that is what I wanted more than anything even though I was a little bit too big for it. It was the new hot item that had just been released. I can remember laying in my bed and thinking about how I was going to drive it all around the neighborhood and how cool I was going to be. I knew that everyone would think that it was so neat.
So, Christmas Eve came along…I made sure to remembered about the candy cane, I followed directions and I stood in front of the
tree and I wished,”oh please Santa can I please have that little crème car with the convertible top that is motorized and goes forwards and backwards and I can drive it all around” not knowing that this was such a huge task of my mother who was a single mother and worked one and a half jobs she knew how desperately I wanted to have that toy and knowing that there was also that impending candy
cane on her mind. So comes Christmas morning I wake up there was no car under the tree and so I patiently just waited while we opened presents. Everything was still magical and I got a lot of wonderful things but I couldn’t help but feel a little down….then on the tree I saw a
note attached to that magical candy cane and it said “you’ve been a very good girl and I was listening to everything you said…..deserve to have this one magical wish brought to you” he said “go and look outside” sure enough there it was, just as I had imagined it would be.
I can look back now, as a parent and realize how difficult that was for my mother because of how expensive that was… and could you imagine the gamble she took, what if I had asked for a talking doll or scooter. I can’t believe how much trouble that Santa could have put her in, but to this day I can still feel the excitement bubbling in my tummy that I felt that very magical Christmas morning.

I really enjoyed reading your Christmas memory! Christmas time seems to be so much more magical as a child, and I too never understood how much parents save just to make that day all the more special for their kids.

Your Christmas story sounds so awesome! It is amazing how much magic surrounds Christmas when you are a child. I love to see it on my children’s faces and hear them talk of it. It is the sweetest thing. Your story is very sweet, what a lucky girl you were (that car was pretty awesome)!
Best,
Victoria

Such an amazing memory. I have no idea how our parents pulled things off but they always did. The struggles that they had when we were kids and yet we never wanted for anything. This is a great reminder to hug the ones your love; especially your parents. Thank you for sharing your memories.

I know my mom sacrificed to get us things before her, and not just at Christmas. I’m glad I had two loving and generous grandmothers too.
