Directed by Des McAnuff, this show considers the interchangeability of a crew of Motown’s finest over a period of 62 years. This musical follows the extraordinary journey of The Temptations from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with their unique repertoire of musical styles. With their shrewdly assembled show, audiences are taken on an incredible journey through R&B music and its rise on the American music scene. “Ain’t Too Proud” is a jukebox musical about the Temptations, one of the most infectiously rhythmic chart-topping R&B groups of all time.

Leading the cast of Ain’t Too Proud as The Temptations are Jalen Harris as ‘Eddie Kendricks,’ Harrell Holmes Jr. as ‘Melvin Franklin,’ E. Clayton Cornelious   as ‘Paul Williams, Michael Andreaus as ‘Otis Williams,’ and Elijah Ahmad Lewis as ‘David Ruffin.’ The touring company also features Brian C. Binion, Reed Campbell, Felander, Shayla Brielle G., Melvin Gray Jr., Devin Holloway, Quiana Onrae’l Holmes, Jeremy Kelsey , AJ Lockhart,  Omar Madden, Dwayne P. Mitchell , Devin Price, Brittny Smith,  Amber Mariah Talley,  Andrew Volzer, and Nazarria Workman.

I do have to say…. I was mesmerized by Jalen Harris as ‘Eddie Kendricks, I literally could have watched a whole show of just him performing. Everyone was amazing but I found my self just drawn to him, scene after scene I could  not take my eyes off of him. He certainly had that special “it factor” that just took the spotlight. 

The Sets and Costumes

Robert Brill’s minimalistic onstage/backstage sets and Paul Tazewell’s appealing, era-accurate costumes for the musical “Ain’t Too Proud” transport audience members back in time to the era of Motown. The use of color is particularly striking, with a mix of teal, pink, and purple that evoke the soulful sound of The Temptations. The attention to detail is also noteworthy, from the tuxedos and gowns to the props that are used throughout the show. From the moment the curtain opens, audience members are immersed in a world of song, dance, and nostalgia that celebrates the legacy of The Temptations.
