5 Tips to Update Your Kitchen Cabinets for $100 or Less
Are you tired of looking at your ugly kitchen cabinets but don’t have the money to redo your kitchen? Then it’s time to break out your DIY gloves and get to work. For $100 or less, you can implement your choice of changes to get the look you want. Whether it’s recycling the hardware or adding an artist touch to your kitchen, you can update your kitchen cabinets on the cheap.
- Recycle the Hardware
If the only thing wrong with your cabinets is the color of the hardware, you can easily change it. For example, if you have ugly brass hardware, you can change the color by using a product called Rub ‘N Buff. This product comes in a variety of metallic colors so that you can get the look you want. Best of all, it costs less than $5 per tube. All you need to do is soak the hardware in degreaser, wash, dry, and follow the instructions for applying. You’ll get huge results for very little money.
- Change Out the Hardware
If you hate the style of your hardware, you can replace it. First things first though. Replacing the hardware isn’t as cheap as the DIY shows make it out to be. You will pay $2-5 per handle. If you have a lot of cabinets, it will eat up most of your $100 budget. Also, if you plan to replace your cabinets in the near future, don’t waste your money on this fix. If your cabinets are in excellent shape and you just hate the hardware, this is a great solution.
- Paint
If you like the look of your cabinets, but hate the color, you can simply paint your cabinets. This does take work. You will have to take off all the doors and hardware and sand all the wood surfaces. If you have solid wood cabinets, you can also choose to stain the cabinets. If you don’t like the look of the wood grain though, you’ll want to choose paint. Don’t be afraid to choose colors you wouldn’t normally think of. Look through magazines and home websites for inspiration.
- Update the Doors
Another tip is to update the look of the doors. If you have cabinet doors that have an inset piece of wood, replace the wood with frosted or clear glass. Just be aware that clear glass means your cabinets will have to be well-organized from now on. You can turn almost any cabinet door into a glass front door it just takes a bit of skill and a couple DIY videos.
- Get Creative
Last, but not least, if you want a truly unique kitchen, paint your cabinets with chalkboard and magnetic paint. This allows you to draw all over your cabinets, stick magnets on them, and be as artistic as you want.
You don’t have to spend a fortune on new cabinets. Sometimes a bit of money and hard work can give you the look you want without the high price tag.
